The Ferrari 156 F1 was a Formula 1 car built and raced by Scuderia Ferrari from 1961 to 1964. It was and remains one of the most legendary Formula racing cars in motorsport history, the "sharknose" racer with which Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips very nearly became Formula 1 World Champion in 1961.
The car's superiority stemmed from the power of its 1.5-litre V6 engine, which more than compensated for the shortcomings of its chassis. The 156 was the first mid-engined Ferrari.
The car was fully competitive right from the start. In 1961, the Scuderia's team was beaten only three times. Giancarlo Baghetti won the Gran Premio di Siracusa, which did not count towards the World Championship, as well as his first World Championship race, the French Grand Prix. However, at these two races the car was officially entered by FISA.
The title battle between Wolfgang von Trips and Phil Hill was decided in the American's favour after the German's fatal crash at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, giving Phil Hill the Scuderia's first Drivers' title since 1958. The Constructors' World Championship also went clearly to the Italian team.
The engine was light and produced 190 hp from 1476 cc. The unit was mounted extremely low in the chassis, which had a positive effect on the car's overall centre of gravity.
