Sim-racing is booming. And not just since Covid-19. But with the pandemic, when many races and entire championships were cancelled and numerous racing drivers turned to the virtual world of motorsport, sim-racing became a firm fixture of the racing scene.

Did you know that on 8 October 1939, a Grand Prix almost took place in Zurich as part of the Swiss National Exhibition «Landi»? Due to the outbreak of the Second World War five weeks earlier, the Grand Prix Zürich was cancelled. Exactly 84 years later, the Grand Prix Zürich takes place on 8 October 2023 in virtual form in the ZÜRIRING Motodrom.

Racing simulators keep getting better. But are they good enough to prepare you for real racing? We asked two young up-and-coming racing drivers, who regularly do virtual laps at ZÜRIRING.

Virtual motorsport and the history of international racing are the passions of Tom Mächler. In the interview, he explains why his Züriring Motodrom differs from other offerings.

As soon as you step into the Züriring Motodrom, you notice: this isn't just a racing centre – history is being written here, namely that of the premier class of all motor racing series, from 1931 right through to the year 2000.

A year ago, Züriring opened its doors in the industrial area of Dietikon, a lovingly furnished motorsport paradise. At the heart of the 340-square-metre Motodrom are eight modern, movable racing simulators.

At the Swiss Location Award 2022, 28’346 organisers and guests, together with an independent panel of experts, made their decision: the ZÜRIRING Motodrom in Dietikon is one of Switzerland's best experience venues.

One thing is certain: motorsport enthusiasts and those who want to become one will get their money's worth at ZÜRIRING. The offering promises a full dose of adrenaline: at the heart of the new, 340-square-metre Motodrom are eight modern, moving racing simulators. This allows around 200 old and new racing cars to be driven in a realistic way, on virtually every racetrack in the world: Monza, Imola, Mugello, GP Nürburgring, the old and new Nordschleife, Salzburgring, Silverstone, Brands Hatch and several more.

Ever wanted to feel like Ayrton Senna? Who wouldn’t? The whole Zwischengas team was certainly keen to take to the track and match the Brazilian.

What sounds like a legendary racetrack is the new mecca for racers. A dream for every motorsport fan, a «state-of-the-art lounge», a place to be seen – for companies, clubs and friends.

MOTORSPORT SIMULATED – After more than two years of planning and construction work, ZÜRIRING has opened its new Simulation Motodrom. There, realistic motorsport can be experienced at events and corporate functions.

The Klausen Race will start virtually next year – 100 years after the first hill climb on the unique 136-corner route from Linthal to the pass summit. Back then, a real challenge for both man and machine.

URI ⋅ Anyone wanting to thunder from Linthal to the Klausen in a racing car like Caracciola, Stuck, Nuvolari and co. can do so exactly 100 years after the premiere – though only in the simulator.
