Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, #704 Hans Herrmann, Mille Miglia

The annual Mille Miglia had a particularly attractive field of entrants in 1955. Mercedes-Benz had big plans and sent out an armada of four 300 SLR racing cars, which were used for the first time. On 1 May 1955, at 7:04 in the morning, the 300 SLR with start number 704 (start number = start time) and its driver Hans Herrmann, together with co-driver Hermann Eger, left the starting ramp in Brescia to tackle the roughly 1,600 km route of the 22nd Mille Miglia. Due to a fuel tank cap coming loose and fuel spilling onto driver and co-driver, the team, running in a promising leading group, sadly had to retire after covering more than half the route. The outcome of the race is now world-famous and has gone down in racing history. Stirling Moss celebrated a triumphant victory.
