Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Karl Kling #4 Panamericana 1952

Race director Alfred Neubauer of Mercedes-Benz was missing just one more victory at the Carrera Panamericana, the long-distance race through Mexico. With four competition vehicles and 35 support staff, the works team flew to South America in November 1952. The engines of the 300 SL were bored out to 3.1 litres, giving them 177 hp. Kling's car, number 4, collided with a vulture 50 km before the finish, shattering the windscreen. It was secured with metal rods - and Kling crossed the finish line as the winner. Second place went to Hermann Lang in car number 3, also driving a Mercedes 300 SL.
