New aerodynamic regulations were introduced for the 1976 Formula 1 season, which meant, among other things, that the car no longer had an airbox behind the cockpit. Instead, NACA-shaped air intakes were built into the sides of the cockpit, channelling air to each cylinder bank of the 12-cylinder boxer engine. The 312T2 was raced by Ferrari in the 1976 and 1977 Formula 1 seasons by Niki Lauda, Clay Regazzoni, Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve. It was also used in the first two races of 1978, before being replaced by the 312T3.
