Der 38 war eine Neuerfindung der fr\u00fcheren Lotus 29 und 34 Indianapolis-Designs und wurde mit einem Voll-Monocoque-Wannenchassis gebaut. Angetrieben wurde er vom gleichen Ford V8-Viernockenmotor mit Benzineinspritzung, der auch im 34er verwendet wurde und rund 500 PS leistete. Obwohl der 38 deutlich gr\u00f6sser war als die Formel-1-Autos der damaligen Zeit, wurde er von den massiven amerikanischen Roadstern in den Schatten gestellt. Der 38er wurde ausserdem speziell mit einer versetzten Aufh\u00e4ngung konstruiert, die theoretisch besser f\u00fcr die ovale Strecke des Indy 500 geeignet war. Diese Art der Aufh\u00e4ngung konnte sich jedoch nie durchsetzen, da sie das Fahrverhalten des Wagens ziemlich eigenartig machte. Insgesamt wurden acht Lotus 38 gebaut.<\/p>\n<p>Der Lotus 38 wurde zur Speerspitze der &#171;britischen Invasion&#187; des amerikanischen Rennsports, da er als erster Mittelmotorwagen das Indy 500 gewann. Der vom Schotten Jim Clark gefahrene Wagen mit der Startnummer 82 qualifizierte sich mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 160,729 mph \u00fcber vier Runden als Zweiter, knapp hinter Anthony Joseph Foyt in einem modifizierten Lotus 34. Clark begann das Rennen schnell und \u00fcbernahm fr\u00fch die Initiative, und obwohl Foyt ihn in der zweiten Runde \u00fcberholte, \u00fcbernahm Clark eine Runde sp\u00e4ter wieder die F\u00fchrung.
