Panamericana, dem Langstreckenrennen durch Mexico. Mit vier Wettbewerbsfahrzeugen und 35 Mann Begleitpersonal flog die Werksmannschaft im November 1952 nach S\u00fcdamerika. Die Motoren der 300 SL wurden auf 3,1 Liter aufgebohrt und kamen dadurch auf 177 PS. Das Fahrzeug von Kling mit der Startnummer 4 hatte 50 km vor dem Ziel eine Kollision mit einem Geier, bei der die Frontscheibe zu Bruch ging. Sie wurde mit Metallst\u00e4ben gesichert &#8211; und Kling ging als Sieger ins Ziel. Mai 1955, morgens um 7:04 Uhr verl\u00e4\u00dft der 300 SLR mit der Start-Nr. 704 (Startnummer = Startzeit) und sein Fahrer Hans Herrmann nebst Beifahrer Hermann Eger die Startrampe in Brescia, um die rund 1600 km lange Strecke der 22. Mille Miglia unter die R\u00e4der zu nehmen.Wegen einem abgesprungenen Tankdeckel mit \u00fcberschwappendem Treibstoff auf Fahrer und Beifahrer mu\u00dfte das Team in aussichtsreicher Spitzengruppe und nach mehr als der H\u00e4lfte der Strecke leider aufgeben.Der Ausgang des Rennens ist mittlerweile weltbekannt und ging in die Renngeschichte ein.
