Mai 1955, morgens um 7:04 Uhr verl\u00e4\u00dft der 300 SLR mit der Start-Nr. 704 (Startnummer = Startzeit) und sein Fahrer Hans Herrmann nebst Beifahrer Hermann Eger die Startrampe in Brescia, um die rund 1600 km lange Strecke der 22. Mille Miglia unter die R\u00e4der zu nehmen.Wegen einem abgesprungenen Tankdeckel mit \u00fcberschwappendem Treibstoff auf Fahrer und Beifahrer mu\u00dfte das Team in aussichtsreicher Spitzengruppe und nach mehr als der H\u00e4lfte der Strecke leider aufgeben.Der Ausgang des Rennens ist mittlerweile weltbekannt und ging in die Renngeschichte ein.
